Most DTF printers in this class use generic rails, commodity bearings and plastic cable carriers. Fedar specifies the motion components used in aerospace and factory automation, in a welded steel chassis rather than an extrusion frame.

Frame — Welded square steel. A rigid chassis does not flex at production speed. Flex becomes banding and misregistration, and on nine channels that reads as color shift.

Linear guide rails — THK (Japan). Micron-level carriage accuracy. Generic rails develop play in the bearing blocks, and printhead drift is unrecoverable in software.

Bearings — NSK (Japan). Rated for dramatically longer service life under continuous load. Bearing failure is a common unplanned-downtime cause on cheaper builds.

Ink chain — IGUS (Germany). The ink chain flexes thousands of times a day. Inferior carriers crack, bind or wear through ink lines, causing leaks, air ingestion and printhead damage.

Servo motors — Leadshine. Closed-loop media feed and carriage control instead of open-loop steppers. Feed consistency is what keeps pass-to-pass color even.

Printheads — Epson i3200-A1 (Japan). Genuine industrial heads with Variable Sized Droplet Technology, proven longevity, and parts availability that is not tied to one supplier.

Print platform — Honeycomb alloy, hard-oxidized and precision-leveled across the full 24-inch width, so drop placement is consistent edge to edge.

The printhead is just the starting point. Nearly every DTF printer on the market runs comparable printhead technology, from the cheapest import to systems costing three times as much. The gap is everywhere else: the frame that holds calibration under load, the motion components that decide long-term accuracy, and whether anyone picks up the phone at 7am on a Monday.

White ink management — Timed stirring and circulation prevent settling and clogs, the single most common cause of DTF downtime.

Standby mode — Quick-start from idle. The line is producing within minutes rather than hours after a slow morning.

Intelligent head strike sensor — Detects and stops a head strike before it happens, protecting the most expensive part of the machine.

Touchscreen control — Live print progress, temperature and humidity readout, and remaining media tracking at the machine.

Automatic cleaning cycles — Scheduled maintenance runs keep nozzles open without an operator standing over the machine.

The shaker runs inline with the printer for continuous roll-to-roll production. It ships fully assembled, fits through a standard 36-inch doorway, and includes a built-in fume extractor — no separate exhaust unit required.

Built for 6-head lines running two or more rolls a day, and rated to roughly 377 sq ft/hr. Motor-vibration distribution with constant-weight sensing, back-and-front curing, and a drum suction mesh belt that holds media flat at speed. Auto-deceleration at the cut point prevents deformation.

How we specify it

The FD70 ships in CMYK + White as standard. We generally spec ours with nine channels, because the extra ink slots are the cheapest gamut you will ever buy on a machine this size — and because we build the profile that makes them usable.

Nine channels: CMYK + O + G + Flo-Y + Flo-M + W. Orange and green reach the saturated oranges, reds and greens that CMYK machines never quite hit. Fluorescent yellow and magenta go past the ordinary print boundary altogether, which puts hi-vis, motorsports and neon spirit wear in range. More channels also mean smoother gradients and cleaner neutrals, because the RIP has more ways to build a color and less need to pile ink into the shadows.

Ink: InkBank 5600 Series. We specify InkBank 5600 Series pigment ink, and your ICC profile is built on it. Change the ink and the profile measured on it no longer describes your printer — so we keep the ink, the profile and the machine as one system. White 5600, CMYKOG 5602, FloYFloM 5621.

If you are interested in a 5-color system only, we recommend Color Prime's Chroma Ink. It has the largest gamut for a CMYK-only ink set.

Before install day — what your building needs

Space: ~5.6 ft wide x 15.4 ft deep for printer and shaker, including 18 in wall clearance, a 15 in media drop, and 36 in of operator clearance.

Power: Two dedicated circuits — 110V/20A for the printer, 220V/20A for the shaker.

Floor: ~1,228 lbs combined for the FD70-6 and SH606. Verify the rating on upper floors.

Air: The shaker runs hot — plan airflow along the full length of the line.

Environment is a printer spec, not a comfort spec. For repeatable color and consistent print function we recommend holding 70–75°F at 40–60% RH across the whole line. You will need climate control where the equipment is: air conditioning and/or heat, a humidifier, and possibly a dehumidifier. Needs vary by location.

FAQ

What is the difference between the FD70-2, FD70-4 and FD70-6? Head count, and nothing else. Every FD70 shares the same frame, the same motion components and the same printhead. Head count sets throughput: roughly 85+ sq ft/hr on the 2-head, 170+ on the 4-head, and 250+ on the 6-head at CMYK+W 6-pass. The 9-color configuration is available on the FD70-4 and FD70-6. Which shaker pairs with this printer? The FD70-6 pairs with the SH606, built for 6-head lines running two or more rolls a day. The SH604 pairs with the FD70-2 and FD70-4.

Do I need a separate exhaust unit? No. The shaker includes a built-in fume extractor. Plan airflow along the length of the line, as the shaker runs hot.

Will it fit through my door? Both shakers ship fully assembled and fit through a standard 36-inch doorway.

What electrical service do I need? Two dedicated circuits: 110V/20A for the printer and 220V/20A for the shaker.

Can I run a different ink? You can, but your ICC profile is measured on InkBank 5600 Series. Changing ink means the profile no longer describes your printer, and color will need to be re-measured.
